Cannot install DPM 2010 getting error message during install RRS feed

    Trying to setup DPM 2010 and during the install I get this error message:

    Verify that the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service is running. If the WMI service is not running, in Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services

    This is really driving me nuts since I looked at some related post to our problem but not sure on one of them they said to change the Token but how am I suppose to do that....any help would be greatly appreciated.

    This is what fixed it....

    Resolution:

    ===========

    1.       We added the Microsoft$DPM$Acct to SQL server instance.

    2.       Changed the user properties for Microsoft$DPM$Acct

    3.       Reset the Service Password for MSDPM SQL Instance Service.

    4.       Reinstalled the DPM successfully.

    5.       We then installed Agents on Exchange server.

    6.       Copied the ESE.dll and ESEUTIL.exe and successfully protected the Exchange.

    CJ,

    If this is an HP server with HP Apps running you are hitting the same wall I did recently.  some HP Apps and perhas other servers require an IE page to operate and they keep you from using the default web page for DPM.  See my post on Unable to run reports anymore or something very similar.

    I looked at that information from your link but that has to pretain to reports not working correctly I cannot even get to that point, I get to the install part and when it gets to Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2010 install I get a error message and cannot continue and it keeps saying that please restart WMI service it is not running....and it is running.

    Any other thoughts on what I might be able to do?

    I was living with that for many months.  See end of my post where I reported back how it was fixed.  When I went into Internet Information Sevrvices (IIS) Manager I could not set the Default Web Site, and that was giving me those errors.  The reason was that one of the HP programs installed with the SmartStart CD was using the defult web site, so i uninstalled all of the HP apps.

     

    Is your Default Web Site taken by another program in IIS manager?

     

    Recently I migrated to a new domain and renamed the DPMserver which required uninstalling everything and re-installing.  When I started the reinstall i was getting that error:

    On the computer on which the DPM database was created, restart the World Wide Web Publishing Service. On the Administrative Tools menu, select Services. Right-click World Wide Web Publishing Service, and then click Start.

    I could not restart.  This is an HP server so i started unintalling any of those programs that might be blocking the default web page starting.

    That was the ticket, I was able to re-install and Reporting is working again.

    OK this is something I really do not want to have to do is remove all my HP applications, since this DPM is going to be installed on this system for backing up Exchange stores, on this server I am running Netbackup 7.0.1 and also have a tape library attached to the server. I have these utilities to run certain things on the server...on is the HP Smart Array controller and also the HP Lights Out ...so what one do you remember removing that allowed it to work, and your error message is totally different then the one I am getting.

    CJ, I removed everything, but I suspect it was either HP System Management Homepage (Most LikelY this one) or Insight Online Diagnostics.

    If you can do without them, give it a try.  If it doesn't work you can always re-install.

    And by the way it did work when i frirst set up DPM2007 about 4 years ago and of course I was always updating the HP stuff when it ws available.  So at some point a new version of one of th HP Apps decided not to play fair with the DPM

    Nope still removed anything to do with HP stuff in add and remove programs except for the HP Storage Library and tape tools and still get the same error message:

    Setup cannot query the system configuration.

    Verify that the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service is running. If the WMI service is not running, in Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services. Right-click Windows Management Instrumentation, and then click Start.

    I was checking the event logs and saw this in the event log and this account is a local account that the system created why would it try to validate on the domain controller.

    The domain controller attempted to validate the credentials for an account.

    Authentication Package: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0

    Logon Account: MICROSOFT$DPM$Acct

    Source Workstation: CCCSDNMGT05

    Error Code: 0x0

    It is fixed, and thought I should report back how it happened.

    I stopped all protection, uninstalled all clients, un-installed DPM 2007.  Renamed the server and migrated to the new domain.
