ADUC Users showing in the SBS Console RRS feed

  • Question

  • On SBS2008, if I create a user in Active Directory Users & Computers, it does not appear on the SBS Console under the Users tab. I'm sure this is by design because you don't want all users to show up there.  But if you do, how can you cause it to appear in the SBS Console?

Example: I want to create a user without a mailbox, but I want that user to show up on the SBS Console.  If I use SBS Console to create the user, it will automatically create a mail-enabled user.  So I use ADUC to avoid this.  Now I want this user to show up in the SBS Console...

  • With SBS you are supposed to create users in the SBS console and thus they appear there. However if you create a user in ADUC you need to place them in the MyBusiness\SBS Users OU, and then in the SBS console under Users and Groups\Users, on the right select "change user role for user accounts", select the user type (standard, Network admin, etc.), check add or change user permissions, next, check the box "display all user accounts in AD", add your user and complete the wizard.

  • I learned something new today.  I tried it and it works fine.  Thanks very much.

  • There is not much in SBS you can't do without the wizards but admittedly it is not always easy to find :-)

    Cheers!

  • It is true that you should create the users in the wizzard. However in my case I did an upgrade from SBS2003 to SBS2011 and it did not put the users in the SBS Console. Your answer is still the correct fix just the cause was not users error. The users were originaly entered through the Console on 2003. They just did not cary over. (Annoying little upgrade quark.)

  • True Pete that is a common cause of the same issue. They can't carry over because the necessary parameters did not exist on SBS 2003.
