directaccess and aircard support RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our current vpn client (shrew) doesn't work with our new verizon aircards.  I found directaccess when I was looking for a solution and directacess might be the answer.  However I am unsure about directaccess and its compatibility with aircards.  The aircards I have used from Sprint and Verizon require you to install their special software to connect to their network.  Does directaccess work with an aircard?

    Thanks,

  • Hi Greg 33,

    Thanks for posting here.

All DA settings on client side will automatically be applied via group policy or manually set. We need make sure this client can properly connect to internet first by this aircard and that is also one of requirement that we need to meet first in order get DA connection works.

We are not quite family with the aircard you referred , but please first make sure it will work properly with Windows 7 operation system which is the client OS that can work with DA infrastructure.

  • Absolutely yes. I have many customers running DirectAccess whose mobile users have various aircards. One of the coolest installs I have had is a police department where computers in the squad cars use cell cards for internet connectivity, and the cars have constant corporate connectivity using DirectAccess.

DA is so much better than VPN, you'll love it!

  • That is good to hear.  However the Verizon 3g network does not support ipv6.  We have to upgrade to their 4g network to get ipv6.  We will get new 4g aircards in about 6 months.  I also don't have a PKI setup.  At least I have something to work towards.  Or maybe this will be the reason to upgrade to Windows Server 2012.  Maybe MS will have streamlined the DA install by then.  I think I will have to try the release candidate.

    Thank you both.

  • Your 3g cards will work, the cards do not need to be capable of IPv6 for DirectAccess to connect. The transition technologies encapsulate all of the IPv6 packets inside IPv4 headers, so to the internet it all looks like IPv4 traffic :)

Server 2012 DA will enable you to implement without a PKI, though it will be in a limited fashion. If you want a fully functional implementation now, go for UAG.
