Forum Moderation Guide: Moderation Tasks

Moderators perform many tasks in a forum, including the following:

  • Determine appropriateness for posts and threads
  • Maintain thread “health” (managing PII, abuse, and tone)
  • Move Threads
  • Escalate abusive posts
  • Manage thread types

Similarly moderators are specifically not responsible for posting official Microsoft messages. Official messages follow a rigorous process and are vetted by many teams including Product Groups (PGs) and Public Relations (PR), and sometimes even executive review. Posting “official-sounding” messages can cause significant damage to Microsoft or a product brand. Such “official-sounding” messages include:

  • “We are looking into this”
  • “We know about this”
  • “This is a known issue”
  • “Microsoft is already investigating this issue”
Instead of posting one of those answers, you can ignore the message or thank them for their input.
