Forum Moderation Guide: Managing Posts and Threads: Quoting

This page is part of the Moderating Microsoft Forums series.

When quoting a user’s post, moderators must use the quoting feature. The quoting feature within the forums makes text much easier to read because it appears as a dark block of text, indicating that your response is, in part, a quote from someone else. Figure 1 shows the proper use of quoting.
Figure 1: Proper Quoting Technique

By contrast, not using the quoting feature makes it difficult to read and understand the workflow of a post. Consider Figure 2, which shows a quote that was just copied/pasted – not quoted. Notice that it is difficult to determine which part is the quote from earlier in the thread and which part is the user’s response.

Moderators are not asked to change the quoting for other users. These examples are presented just to exhibit how moderators are expected to quote.

  • I agree that quoting can make it much clearer to follow a thread. A disadvantage of excessive quoting is that it reduces the amount of new material per forum page and hence makes it necessary to page forward/back more frequently. Quoting should therefore be used judicously.

  • Personally, i prefer prepending  ">". I find this less intrusive, especially when responding to many points individually.

  • The main point is that it is a good practice to make sure it is obvious what you are responding to, whether you use the prepending method or the built-in quoting feature. Thanks for the comment.
