Services are programs or processes that start with Windows XP Professional and run in the background, providing necessary functions to other programs and operating system components. Services start prior to user logon, so a service can begin providing its functions without a user having to log on. Some services depend on other services, meaning that the other services must be running first for the dependent service to run. Windows XP Professional uses these dependencies to determine the order in which it starts services. You can disable services temporarily or even prevent services from running when Windows starts up by using the System Configuration Utility and the Services console.


How to Manage Services by Using the Services Console


The Services console is the primary method for managing services on a computer running Windows XP Professional. You can access the Services console in the following ways:

  • Open the Administrative Tools folder (from Control Panel) and double-click Services.

  • Open the Computer Management window, expand the Services And Applications node, and then click Services, as you can see in the following figure:



  • Create a custom Microsoft Management Console (MMC) console and add the Services console, as you can see in the following figure:












Note: As you can see in the above figure, you can remotely connect to another computer to access Services console.

  • You can also access the Services console by executing services.msc in the Run dialog box, as you can see in the following figure:



No matter which way you open the Services console, the interface is the same. In the right pane, you will see a long list of the available services along with a description, the current status of the service (Stopped or Started), the Startup Type (Automatic, Manual, or Disabled), and how the service logs on to the computer.
