Configure Excel and Excel Services by using SQL Server Analysis Services on SharePoint Server 2010

Microsoft Excel 2010, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 PowerPivot for Microsoft Excel 2010, and Excel Services in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 enable information workers (IWs) to collect, produce, analyze, and share business intelligence (BI) data. These self-service BI tools provide IWs with methods to compare and analyze BI data without relying on their IT departments.

By using Excel 2010 and PowerPivot for Excel, the IW can connect to and import data from multiple back-end sources such as SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server Analysis Services, and SQL Server Reporting Services. Many line-of-business (LOB) data sources such as IBM, Oracle, and SAP systems can also be mined by using these self-service BI tools. After connecting to the data source, the IW can collect this data in an Excel workbook and then produce reports. By using Excel Services, the IW can publish these reports in the organization and share the BI data in the reports with associates and customers.
