Term Definition
Designer A web and application design program used to design, build, and customize Web sites running on SharePoint Foundation 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010. It can be downloaded for free both in a 32 bit and in a 64 bit version.
Document library A location on a SharePoint site where users can upload, collect and manage files with other team members. By default, a team Web site comes with a built-in document library named Shared Documents, which is listed on the Quick Launch bar as well as on the Documents and Lists page.
Feature Specific declarative (XML) programming elements that work as a control panel for a host of function. Features are deployed by means of solutions.
List Editable, web-based table that facilitates concurrent, multi-user interactions against a common, centralized and extensible set of columns and rows.
Permission level A set of rules (permissions) that determines what an user or a group can do on a site, list, library or item.
Quick launch A collection of links to frequently used site resources placed on the left side of a SharePoint site's page.
Site collection The entire hierarchical structure of a top level site and all its subsites.
Solution The only supported method for deploying developer artifacts consistently to multiple servers in a farm. Each solution contains one or more features, thus providing a mechanism for extending SharePoint functionality.
Web part The basic building blocks of a page: modular and reusable pieces of code that allow users to modify their appearance, content and behaviour.
