The Remote Registry service is used for gathering Performance Metrics. This service is installed on Windows-based clients and servers, but the following conditions must exist for this inventory method to be successful:

• The Remote Registry service must be started. On Windows operating systems prior to Windows Vista and Windows 7, it is configured to start automatically by default.
• The Windows Firewall File and Printer Sharing exception must be enabled.
• You must authenticate using local Administrator equivalent privileges.

If the Remote Registry service is disabled on a machine, enable it before performing the performance data collection. You can either manually enable the service or configure it to start via Group Policy and wait until the servers are restarted (and the service starts) before starting the Performance Metrics Wizard.

To manually enable the Remote Registry service

1. On the computer on which you want to collect performance data, click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Manage.
2. Microsoft Management Console starts.
3. In the navigation pane, expand Services and Applications, and then click Services.
4. In the console pane, right-click Remote Registry and then click Start.

To enable File and Print Sharing

1. Open Control Panel, click System and Security, and then click Windows Firewall.
2. In the left pane, click Advanced settings, and in the console tree, click Inbound Rules.
3. Under Inbound Rules, locate the rules File and Printer Sharing (NB-Session-In) and File and Printer Sharing (SMB-In).
4. For each rule, right-click the rule, and then click Enable Rule.
