OVERVIEW / PURPOSE / GOAL

The purpose of this wiki page is to cover an issue I recently worked on in support. The goal of this article is to provide you with information on the installation of the FIM 2010 R2 Product, and something that you may encounter.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Recently worked an issue where we were upgrading from FIM 2010 Update 2 ( 4.00.3606.2 ) to FIM 2010 R2. During the upgrade process, we got to a spot where the installation dialog has a status of "Converting representation of references" and the progress bar has essentially stopped progressing.

ITEMS TO CHECK

To ensure that information is still processing, you can do a SQL Server Profiler trace to watch the data
You can utilize tools such as Resource Monitor to watch SQL Server working.

CAUSE

At this point of the installation, the installation is opening all connector space objects and replacing all of the reference attribute values from DNs to GUIDs. If you have a lot of connector space objects, including place holders, then this process may take awhile to sift through all of the connector space objects.
So your installation is not stalled, it is simply processing all of your connector space objects.
