How to Install and Configure Windows Server 2012 for SharePoint 2010

I am going to explain how to install and configure a Microsoft Server 2012 for a operational SharePoint 2010 server.
I already wrote a BlogPost about SP2013 if interessted:

But a virtual college of mine (LinkedIn) asked me, how to prepare a Microsoft Server 2012 for Microsoft SharePoint 2010, because without a great operational Operating System your SharePoint Server 2010 will always be non-conform*

Download Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate (RC)

Installation Guide

Please download the ISO file from the above showed link and load it to your Virtual Machine.
Start then your machine, and the first screen that you will see the language screen. Please select the appropriative:

  • Language
  • Time and current format
  • Keyboard Input

On this screen only click on “Install now

You will see that only the datacenter version is available on the windows setup. Be aware and careful to select the version with a GUI, and not the Server Core Installation.

The difference between this 2 is quite simple, the one has images and the other not .. :-)

Select, I accept the license terms and click Next

Easy as writing your name, Microsoft Server 2012 is now begun to install the Operating System.

When the installation is finished, you will have to fill a password for the local Administrator. Fill the password and be sure that they match.

Configuring AD DS

So, when you are finished with the installation of Microsoft Server 2012, you will be surprised with the new Metro Style of Microsoft. It will be very difficult the first time to use and manage you Server, but after a few minutes, you should be able to add a new Role/Feature for SharePoint 2010…

So please go to “Add Roles and Features Wizard” on your Domain Controller

Select the first option “Role or Feature” installation and click next.

Normally, you should only see “one” server, but if not, please select the Domain Controller and click next.

Select “Active Directory Domain Services” and Microsoft Server 2012 will automatically shows up a new screen with the features that this role needs.
Just click on “Add Features” and click Next.

On the features screen, you can select but for the Domain Controller we don’t need any other thing, so you can just click on Next.

A little summary, just click on Next.

And finally, you can choose to install click Install for the installation.

Once finished you can click Close.

On your Server Manager you will see a couple off warnings and one of them ask you if you want to promote this server to a domain controller?

The answer is pretty simple, so click without waiting on the link for opening the wizard.

Here opens a new screen. The “Active Directory Domain Services Configuration Wizard”.

As first question, Microsoft Servers asks you if you want to add a new forest and to specify the name. Our forest will be named: SpPirate.net

On the second screen, be sure that the forest functional level and domain functional level are both selected on Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate and provide for the Directory Services Restore Mode a Password

Provice a NetBIOS name. In my case I use "SPPIRATE".

You can choose a Location for your Database Folder, Log files and SYSVOL, but I prefer to leave it as it is. So just click on Next.

Everything is now OK, and you will be seeing a review of your installation. For begin the installation please click “Next”.
PS: there is a button “View script”. You can download the script and use PowerShell for making a new Domain Controller.

Please be sure that "All prerequisites checks passes successfully".

So you can begin to "Install".

When you finished promoting your Domain Controller, create a new Organizational Unit on “Active Directory for users and computer”.

And create your SharePoint Farm Administrator, I name my user “SPFarm” but it’s not a good name: maybe you should name it SPFARMGA (SharePoint Farm Global Administrator)

Provide a Password and check the 2 boxes:

  • User cannot change password
  • Password never expires

Configuring Application Server for SharePoint 2010

Our domain controller is now ready to use, so we are going to configure our Application Server where SharePoint 2010 will turn.
Repeat the steps for installing Microsoft Server 2012 till “adding roles/features”.

Rename your new Server and add it to the domain SpPirate.Net

Add the specific role “Application Server

This will install .NET Framework 3.5 who includes 2.0 and 3.0

But this will fail, there is a WorkAround proposed by Microsoft. Please execute this command with PowerShell v3

Once finished we can begin with the installation of Microsoft SharePoint 2010.

After installing the prerequisits provide to the Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 the license key and click Continue.

Select "Complete Farm"

Be sure that on the SQL Server, the use who will accessing the database has DBCREATOR and SECURITYADMIN rights.

Fill the next information:

  • Database: GOKMANIA-SQL-12\MSSQLSP12
  • Database Name: SharePoint_Config
  • Username: sppirate\spfarm
  • Password: Vision1T

A review, click on Next

!!! Do not forget to change under IIS 8.0 the framework from 4.0 to 2.0.

And your SharePoint is now aviable on Microsoft Server 2012.

Happy Configuring,

  • I'm trying to install Sharepoint 2010 on Windows Server 2012, same as above, but getting compatibility issues while installing the prerequisites & Setup. Can you please let me know if you also faced the compatibility issues and how did you overcome them?

    Thanks,

    Manoj

  • Hallo,

Could you send me the logs at Ozcifci.gokan@live.be so I can check your errors

    Thanks,

    Gokan

  • This article seems to be an old article using Win 2012 RC.  Did you try with Win 2012 RTM?

This below official article clearly indicates that SP2010 on Win2012 is not supported until SP2 for SP2010 is released.
