With DPM 2010 you can backup VMs at the VHD level and do a file level restore of that VM when needed. This is called Item Level Recovery. NOTE: to use ILR, you must enable the Hyper-V role on the server running DPM 2010, because DPM takes advantage of Hyper-V's WMI Provider to mount snapshots and provide the ILR functionality. The Hyper-V MI Provider is only available by enabling the Hyper-V role.
Here's how to recover an item using ILR:
1. Launch DPM 2010.
2. Select Recovery.
3. Under the Recoverable Data, select the VM from which you wish to recover data.
4. Choose the date and time for a point in time recovery under Recoverable Item.
a. Right-click on this item to see the Recovery dialog that will step you through restoring the entire backup, not the Item Level Recovery.
b. To reach the Item Level Recovery, DOUBLE-CLICK on the Recoverable Item and wait a few seconds. You will then be presented with a list of available files for recovery. Alternatively, you can search to find a specific file for recovery.
