Mac Mountain Lion Compatibility With WHS 2011, SBS 2011 Essentials and Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials

Mac Mountain Lion Compatibility With Windows Home Server 2011, Small Business Server 2011 Essentials and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials
Applies to

  “Small Business Server 2011 Essentials”, “Windows Home Server 2011” or “Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials”.

Mac OS x10.8 (Mountain Lion) is supported by client connector for the above 3 products.  However, there are several compatibility issues reported.  While we are actively working on further resolutions, we recommend following steps to workaround these issues.


1. An error meesage pops up when deploying connetor: “’Connector for Mac’ can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.”

Issue
After downloading the connector, double clicking the connector for mac, you will get an error dialog, indicating  that the application is not from an identified developer.
This is caused by the Gatekeeper, a new feature of Mountain Lion, that requires applications to be signed by identified developers.

Workaround

  1. Please turn the Gatekeeper off beofre running the connector.
  2. You will need to go to security & privacy, select “Anyway” for “allow applications downloaded from” to turn this feature off. 
  3. You can turn it on back after installation done.
 
2. Dashboard cannot login after correct credential is entered

Issue

    After entering the user credential, user cannot login to dashboard,  the login page hangs.
    To further confirm the issue, you could also check the log file In the /library/logs/Windows Server.log in console, the error info should be like this:
  Jul 30 14:18:28 colorados-Mac-mini.local WSL[983] <Error>: /Users/xcbusr/macbuild/Request/9AA878B8-1898-4BEA-8BA9-  0B5091CFCEE7/MacUtils/ServerConfig.m:186 Failed to load server configuration file - The requested URL was not found on this server.
   This is caused by the API change in Mountain Lion which does not compatible with previous one.

Workaround:

1.    Navigate to Application folder

2.    Show Package Contents of Windows Server Launchpad

3.    Navigate to info.plist

4.    Modify the info.plist permission to grant current user write permission

5.    Find ServerInfoDefaultHTTPPort and change its default value from 80 to 65510

6.    Modify the info.plist permission back to its default setting.

7.    Restart Launchpad

 2. Time Machine Backup
For Mac client version lower than OS X 10.7 (Lion), you can configure the Mac time machine using Mac UI, and backup to a SMB share on the server. The Launchpad will display the time machine status.

    Dashboard issue: There's a quicker way to edit Info.plist. Open a terminal and navvigate to

    /Applications/Windows Server Launchpad.app/Contents

    Now run the command

    sudo nano Info.plist

    Enter your password, make the change, then press Ctrl+X (Exit), Y (Yes) and Enter.

    This fix, results in an unexpected error on Mountain Lion 10.8.2 - where the launchpad doesn't sign in and it is still rendered useless.

    When I run the Mac Connector with WHS 2011, I was able to pass User Credentials, Client Description but failed the Installation step. I got Registration failed: Cannot establish connection with the registration service. From the Server Dashboard I can see my Macbook Pro but failed to register computer type and OS system. Any idea?
