Internet Explorer 8 Is Not Displaying Pages or Opening Links

(Captured from the threads Links in will not open a new window or tab in Windows 7 IE8 and Internet Explorer 8 not displaying pages or not opening up links, squirrel mail etc. on the Microsoft Answers Internet Explorer forum.)

Problem

Internet Explorer 8 fails to display Web pages, even though other Internet applications and Web browsers work fine.

Symptoms include:

  • Seeing a blank page in Internet Explorer and "Done" displayed in the Internet Explorer status bar (in the lower left corner of the window).
In some instances, copying the URL and pasting it into another browser tab or window results in the page loading properly.
  • Clicking links in a web page have no effect.
In some instances, right-clicking the link and then clicking Open in New Tab results in the link loading properly.

Possible Resolutions

There are a large number of reasons Internet Explorer or other browsers can have problems. Below is a growing list of resolutions that have worked for some people (please add more as you find them!):

If none of these solutions work, check the Microsoft Answers Internet Explorer forum for more suggestions, or contact Microsoft Customer Support.

Other Possible Resolutions

These resolutions have been reported by at least one person on the forums to work - if they work for you, please move them to the "Possible Resolutions" heading:

Deselect the Automatically Detect Settings Checkbox

To do so, use the following procedure:

  1. From the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Connections tab.
  3. Click the LAN Settings button.
  4. Clear the Automatically detect settings checkbox and then click OK.

  • Here's a fix that worked for me on Win 7, 32-bit, IE8. First I ran the McAffee Removal tool because my machine came with a trial version pre-installed.

    1. Backup all the registry on your C:\ drive by creating a restore point.

    2. Copy the script below and paste into Notepad (with word wrap OFF)

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{79EAC9C5-BAF9-11CE-8C82-00AA004BA90B}]

    @="IHlinkFrame"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{79EAC9C5-BAF9-11CE-8C82-00AA004BA90B}\NumMethods]

    @="8"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{79EAC9C5-BAF9-11CE-8C82-00AA004BA90B}\ProxyStubClsid32]

    @="{A4A1A128-768F-41E0-BF75-E4FDDD701CBA}"

    3. Save as Fix_IE8Win7.reg  in a handy place like desktop or My Documents

    4. Double-click the file, tell Win 7 yes you want to run it when it pops up the publisher unknown warning.

  • DocBlase's fix was the only solution to this problem that has worked for me (in my case Win 7, 32-bit IE9beta) but boy would I love to know what it's actually doing! How could this problem be so widespread and yet need such an arcane fix?
