SharePoint 2010: How to Recover Project Server or SharePoint After a Reckless Password Change

So you have a Project Server 2010 deployment. It was running just fine and suddently it isn't working anymore. You seem to remember that probably someone changed the password of the farm user account. Maybe someone tried to login too many times with the wrong credentials and the account now is locked. Of course none of this is our fault. After all, we IT staff are never wrong and the culprit is the software, the consultant that implemented the system, the upgrade or Microsoft right?

Either way, you probably are in shock because your beloved Project Server is not working anymore and the users are having a panic attack.

What you need to do before you create a new account policy and instruct those users not to change what they should not, is to refresh the credentials used for your system.

Before following these steps, read them and make sure you understand what I'm saying. If you do not know where to go and what to change please do not attempt them. Go to Microsoft Support or contact your service provider. I do not assume any responsibilities on the outcome.

If SharePoint Central Administration is accessible do the following

  1. Go to Managed Accounts.
  2. Edit each and every registered account and refresh the password.
  3. Go to Service accounts.
  4. Reset the account related to every service.
  5. Go to Services in Windows.
  6. Locate the services that use any of those managed accounts.
  7. Restart one by one those services. If anyone fails to start, reset the credentials there.

If SharePoint Central Administration is not accessible do the following:

  1. Go to Services in Windows.
  2. Locate the services that use any of the managed accounts and reenter the password.
  3. Restart those services.
  4. Go to IIS management, locate all the Application Pools that use SharePoint accounts and reenter the credentials.
  5. Restart the Application Pools.
  6. Central Administration should be accessible now. Follow the steps above for when Central Administration is accessible.
