I have deleted a user (ex-employee) and am attempting to have their email address forward to another user. I'm trying to add that email address to the "Email Address" settings of the extant user. Upon hitting Save I get the error:
The proxy address "smtp:oldusername@mydomain.com" is already being used by "Old User". Please choose another proxy address.
Howe do I get Exchange to release the email address so I can attach it to a different account? It should have done this when I deleted the old user.
@DonMangiarelli, were you able to successfully enable archive on the mailbox? Looks you that mailbox is queued for a move so you can't configure archive settings. Either wait until the move has been completed, or remove the user from the "Move" queue and then enable archive on the mailbox.
@OpenUp_CMS, @mechanos101: a couple of questions. Have other migrations worked for you before? When are you seeing the error? On an individual mailbox or during a batch move?
Was the user recently converted to a mailbox? If you have a forest where AD replication is slow it could take time for the changes to replicate.
@WJSuarez , is the First Server Down, Deleted , DAG Member that is not online ? Each server has a System Attendant mailbox that you might need: technet.microsoft.com/.../aa997314%28v=EXCHG.65%29.aspx .Make sure the Server is online
I get this error when trying to save changes after Enabling Archive on a mailbox
error
Mailbox 'XXXXX' has move status Queued. You can't enable or disable an archive while the mailbox is being moved.

I'm trying to migrate a user from the default database to a newly created database (that is mounted), the migration fails with the error "The user does not have an Exchange mailbox)
I get this error when click on "Migration" and during Move user mailbox.
"The user does not have an Exchange mailbox"
@Dean, can you add the error string?
@Dean, can you add the error message? Might help us with the troubleshooting. Thanks.
I have an Office 365 Demo account. I activated In-Place Archive and then clicked View Details. I get a generic error message with a link to click here for details that sends me to this location. I don't have any clues about what error occurred.
@Jonathan, re: "The external e-mail address SMTP :***** is not an SMTP e-mail address" can you give me some more background on the error message? When are you seeing it? It's possible this error appears for mail contacts or mail users when the ExternalEmailAddress is blank. Thanks.
@WJSuarez, regarding "cannot open mailbox...": a couple of things. Can you send the full error details? Run $error[0].Exception | fl –f * right after the cmdlet fails.
Also, have you checked to make sure that the mailbox database that is hosting the mailbox is mounted. If it’s mounted, then can you run test-mapiconnectivity –database DatabaseName to check if it’s accessible. Thanks.
