Client Bare Metal Restore Fails due to VDS drive initialization fails

Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, Windows Home Server 2011, Window Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials

 

Symptom:

When you do client bare metal restore, it may fail in the last page (page with restore progress). In the log file, you will find error message as below:

ERROR: Failed to initialize VDS, 0x80080005

Cause:

The VDS initialization fails due to some permission issue.

 

Solution:

 

You can work around this issue using the following steps:

  1. When you get the failure dialog, click back to go back to the previous dialog.
  2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift for several seconds, wait for the command line window pops up
  3. Type diskmgmt.msc, and disk management window pops up.
  4. Then leave the disk management window opens and click next to go through the Bare Metal Restore wizard.

  • Thanks, this worked for me.  I was not able to restore multiple PC's from WHS2011 backups because of this issue.  

    I'm inserting the error from WHS restore wizard to help people find this solution.  The error in WHS was:

    "An error prevented the Full System Restore Wizard from creating partition on the

    computer that you want to restore."
