Hi, today we are going to see what Shared Storage means in SharePoint Sever 2013 .. Controlling database size in SharePoint 2013 is easier with new platform enhancements supporting shredded storage of large files or BLOBs such as Word documents, PowerPoint Presentations and even PDFs.
The concept of Shredded storage was introduced in SharePoint 2010 however when files where saved into SharePoint they were stored as a single blob. This meant that for every version of a document stored in a library a full copy of the files was stored in the database as a single blob, which could potentially make the size of the content database large over time. Now with SharePoint 2013, files stored in a document library are broken up into “shredded blobs.” This means that when changes are made to a single file only the blob that is changed is written back to the database instead of the entire document. Not only does this drastically reduce the size of the file in the database it also increases performance when retrieving a file.
Shredded Storage is not a replacement for Remote Blob Storage (RBS) and works with RBS if you have your SharePoint environment configured for RBS. In addition, Shredded Storage is enabled by default, which means no additional configuration steps for site administrators!
