There are many questions in the TechNet Forum for Training and Certification about upgrading from MCSA on Server 2003 or MCSE on Server 2003 so I decided to write a wiki about this topic. You can upgrade to the new MCSA: Server 2012 certification from MCSA or MCSE 2003 but the time you have to do this is very limited, the MSCA 2003 and MCSE 2003 certification and the upgrade exams to MCITP will retire soon!
Upgrade from MCSA 2003:
1) Pass exam 70-648 : Upgrading your MCSA on Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008, Technology Specialist This exam expires on 31 July 2013! After that date no upgrade path will be available for MCSA 2003!
2) Pass exam 70-646: MCITP: Server Administrator. This exam will remain valid after 31 July 2013 and 31 January 2014 as a valid module for MCSA: Server 2008.
MCTIP: Server Administator will automaticly also give you the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification.
3) Pass exam 70-417: Upgrading your skills to MCSA Windows Server 2012
Upgrade from MCSE 2003:
1) Pass exam 70-649 : Upgrading your MCSE on Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008, Technology Specialist This exam expires on 31 January 2014! After that date no upgrade path will be available for MCSE 2003!
2) Pass exam 70-646: MCITP: Server Administrator. This exam will remain valid after 31 July 2013 and 31 January 2014 as a module for MCSA: Server 2008.
What to do if you will not be able to pass the required exams before 31 July 2013 or 31 January 2014:
If you will not be able to pass the required upgrade exams on time then you have two options:
1) Go for MCSA: Server 2008 by passing the seperate exams (70-640, 70-642, 70-646 ) and do the upgrade exam 70-417 to MCSA: Server 2012. This option is interesting if you already passed two of the required exams. http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/mcsa-windows-server-2008-certification.aspx
2) Go for MCSA: Server 2012 without upgrading from previous certification (exams 70-410. 70-411, 70-412). As this certification requires only three exams every upgrade alternative that requires passing more then 3 exams might not a be a very smart thing to do. http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/mcsa-windows-server-certification.aspx Overview of the upgrade path to MCSA: Server 2012 from MCSA: Server 2008 or MCITP:
Upgrade from MCSA: Server 2012 to the MCSE tracks: From MCSA: Server 2012 you earn one of the new MCSE Certification tracks, each MCSE track will require additional exams that you will need to pass to achieve the MCSE certification that has your interest. These tracks are new and will be available for the next few years, most of the self-paced guides from Microsoft Press for the MCSE exams will be releases at the end of September 2013 You find the MCSE tracks and the exams required here Good luck with upgrading before 31 July 2013 for MCSA 2003 or 31 January 2014 for MCSE 2003 and feel free to ask questions about upgrading in the TechNet Training and Certification Forum.
