This article explains how to manually install Exchange service packs and rollups on a computer that is running Forefront Security for Exchange (FSE).

Disable FSE using the FSC Utility. Note that your computers will not be protected after FSE is disabled.

Stop the Exchange and Forefront services.


In a clustered environment, when running the FSC Utility to disable FSE, the Exchange services are automatically taken offline. Therefore, you can skip step 1 and proceed directly to step 2.

From a command prompt, navigate to the Forefront Security for Exchange Server installation directory. Disable Forefront Security dependencies by typing:

FSCUtility /disable
To confirm that the Forefront Security dependencies have been removed, type:

FSCUtility /status
Restart the Exchange services.

Follow the instructions provided with the specific service pack or rollup that you are installing.
After the installation is complete and the Exchange services have been restarted, verify that mail is flowing.
Enable FSE using the FSC Utility:
- Stop the Exchange services.

- From a command prompt, navigate to the Forefront Security for Exchange Server installation directory. Enable Forefront Security dependencies by typing:
  
  FSCUtility /enable
- To confirm that the Forefront Security dependencies have been reestablished, type:
  
  FSCUtility /status
- Restart the Exchange services.


In a clustered environment, when running the FSC Utility to enable FSE, the Exchange services are automatically taken offline. Therefore, you can skip step 1 and proceed directly to step 2.


Some Exchange service packs and rollups require you to download and install an FSE update in order to ensure that FSE operates correctly.
