The edge transport server role is different from other Exchange 2007 server roles that live inside the corporate network. This role is designed to live outside the corporate network, detached from Active Directory to service inbound and outbound SMTP mailflow for the Exchange organization. The server does not utilize the SMTP module of IIS services as in the past, but rather has its own SMTP stack written from scratch as managed code.

This page is meant to be the anchor for topics that relate to the Edge Transport server role.
