TechNet Wiki: Featured Article Teams

TechNet Wiki: Featured Article Teams

Overview

We have one team for each version of the Wiki. Each team exists to update the featured articles on the home page of that language-based version of TechNet Wiki. Because this takes a unique and passionate personality, the team will change regularly. The appointed Team Captain (one per language) will work with the Community Council member assigned to this Area. They will make sure there are at least 4 members of their team (4-10, per language), and a current Captain is designated each month.

Team Responsibilities

The team will sync for the specific periods (for example, the English team will pick two articles each week). The team captain will submit the articles to the Wiki Community Council to feature them. So the real responsibility is communication as a team and recommendations/voting for what should be featured each time. (For example, Russian is four new articles each month.) As we get more contributions for each language, the cadence will increase accordingly.

Team Captains

The Featured Article Team Captains (1 per language) are invited to become captains by the current Community Council member assigned to this area. They are selected from the existing team members.

Responsibilities:

  1. 1-Month Commitment to remain Team Captain (for that language), starting at the beginning of each month.
  2. When to Step Down: They can stay as Team Captain for as long as they want (years), as long as they are not asked to step down. They can be asked to step down from Captain (or are advised to do so on their own) if they cannot keep the commitments or if they are abusing their position (for example, submitting articles that aren't agreed to by their team). The Community Council member assigned to this Area and the head of the Community Council will discuss this with them.
  3. Recommendation for Replacement: If they want to leave the position at the end of the month, they should have a recommendation for a replacement ready to the Community Council member assigned to this Area. (For example, they want to recommend an active member of their team to replace them.) And they should be willing to invite that person as their replacement if the Community Council member requests it. However, if the Community Council member has someone else in mind, the former Team Captain must respect that. Any disputes about who the new Team Captain invitation should go to... will be decided by the head of the Community Council.
  4. Recruit the Team: Find new members to nominate to their team. Once found, they must submit the nominees to the Community Council member assigned to this Area for review (and CC/notify the head of the Community Council). If the two people (Team Captain & the Council member) agree to inviting the new member, then the Captain invites the new member to join their Featured Article Team. Each language must have at least 4 members (and no more than 10).
    • NOTE: If a new team member is nominated or self-nominated by anyone, then the Team Captain must decide if they agree on the nomination. If so, then they follow the same process of submitting the nominee to the Community Council member for review.
  5. Lead the Team: Communicate with their team each period to select the new articles to feature (they must wait at least 3 days for responses from their team members and must get at least four responses before they can act on it). Selection can be done by voting or by discussion. If disagreements arise, then turn to voting. The following period-length parameters will change in the future, depending on the change of the quantity of articles added for each language (and as new language Wikis get added to these ones):
    1. English: One-week periods. Two new articles each week.
    2. Portuguese: Two-week periods. Two new articles every two weeks.
    3. Russian: One-month periods. Four new articles every month.
    4. Chinese: One-month periods. Two new articles every month.
  6. Ask Team Members to Step Down: If a team member is not proactive or is not working out (for example, they always nominate and vote for their own articles, articles that point to sites they're involved with, articles that aren't accurate or high quality, etc.), then run the recommendation by the Community Council member assigned to this Area (and CC/notify the head of the Council). If the Council member agrees, gracefully let the person know that the Council asked to replace them.

Submitting the Articles

  1. Every so often, the team captain sends an email to tnwiki at Microsoft with the articles they want featured:
    • Portuguese sends two articles every two weeks.
    • Russian sends four articles every month.
    • Chinese sends two articles every month.
    • English sends two articles each week.
  2. Use this template:
[Article Name]
[Article URL]
[Author Name]
[Author’s Profile URL]
[Date of Last Edit]
[Description of the article; you can copy and paste the first part of it; between 400-500 characters]

We will then submit the request to the support team, to get the featured articles updated. For English, Portuguese, and Chinese, the two new articles will push the two bottom articles off the list. The two top articles then move to the bottom. So we cycle through the articles that way.

  • So, I am listed in 2 teams but I am not sure what I am supposed to do exactly.

  • You already did it! You helped the Russian team decide on four articles to feature. I'll get the English team going once we get through featuring the TechNet Guru winners. Thanks!

  • I'm still not sure how to choose that articles. Is it on my own preferences or do we have an access to some stats?
