Wiki: Creating a Test Lab Guide lab diagram

A Test Lab Guide (TLG) lab diagram is a visual portrayal of the logical configuration of computers and subnets for a specific test lab. TLG lab diagrams give the reader the layout of the resulting test lab so that the appropriate physical or virtual computers and subnets can be built.

Here is an example of a TLG lab diagram:

This article describes the process for creating and publishing a TLG lab diagram.

End-to-end process for creating and publishing a TLG lab diagram

  1. Make a list of the computers and subnets that are needed for your diagram and their titles.
  2. Create a TLG lab diagram using the graphical program or app of your choice, indicating the set of computers and subnets and their connections. If you are adding a TLG lab diagram to a TechNet Wiki page, ensure that your graphical program can export the diagram to a PNG, GIF, or JPG file (needed for inserting a graphic in a TechNet Wiki article). If you use PowerPoint, you can use the TLGLabDiagrams.PPTX file in the Test Lab Guide (TLG) Content Creation Kit as a starting point. If you use Visio, you can also use the additional icons in the New Office Visio Stencil.
  3. Verify that your TLG lab diagram contains all of the necessary computers and subnets, including their names and connections. Show it to someone else to see if the lab configuration makes sense and the connections are clear.
  4. If needed for including in a TechNet Wiki article, create a PNG, GIF, or JPG version of the diagram.
  5. Add your TLG lab diagram to your modular TLG, TLG mini-module, test lab extension, or TLG portal page.
