Microsoft Rights Management sharing application release notes

This topic covers known issues and answers to common questions about installing and running Microsoft Rights Management sharing application.

Known Issues

  1. If you try to install a version of Microsoft Rights Management sharing application that does not match the operating system platform, setup.exe fails with the error "The system cannot find the file specified" as shown in the following figure:

There are two versions of Microsoft Rights Management sharing application for x64-based and x86-based computers respectively. This error occurs if you download the Microsoft Rights Management sharing application x64.zip file and try to run setup.exe on an x86-based computer or vice-versa. If you see this error, download the other installation package and run setup.exe again.

  2. If run setup.exe by using an account that is not a member of the local Administrators group on the computer, the installation may conclude with warning "This program might not have installed correctly" in a Program Compatibility Assistant dialog as shown in the following figure.

If you see this error, run setup.exe again as a member of the local Administrators group.

  3. When you open a PowerPoint presentation as Read-only from SharePoint and click Share Protected on the Office ribbon, you receive an error: "Presentation (unknown member) : Invalid request. Presentation cannot be modified." as shown in the following figure:

This is a known issue with PowerPoint, as described in KB article 2618028. A more user-friendly error message will be provided in a future release.

Troubleshooting

This section covers common errors, probable causes, actions to take to resolve the issue, and how to email a log file to the AD RMS SDK feedback alias for analysis.

  • %Filepath% - Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

To resolve this issue, you can do either of the following as appropriate for the specified file.

    • Rename the unprotected file

    • Delete the previously protected file

  • You do not have the permissions to view this content.

To resolve this issue, you need to contact the content owner using either the email address or Web site information provided.

  • This file cannot be protected because it is already open in another program.

To resolve this issue, first close the application where the file is open and then retry protecting it.

  • This file cannot be protected because it is a system file.

In order to ensure that your computer continues to run correctly, the Microsoft Rights Management sharing application does not protect system files.

  • This file cannot be protected because your administrator has blocked encryption of this file format.

To resolve this issue, contact your administrator for more information.

Also, if a file is marked in File Explorer with the Read-only attribute, any attempt to apply protection to it will fail.

  • Attempting to remove protection from a file that is not protected throws an error ‘Could not perform the specified operation in a reasonable amount of time. Please try again later.’

Ensure that the file you are attempting to remove protection from is protected.

  • I don’t see all the RMS templates published by my organization on the right-click protection menu. Why?

If you connect to RMS servers that publish a total of over 13 templates, only the first 13 templates will be available under the right-click menu option. This is a known issue and will be resolved in a future release.

  • Emailing log files to AD RMS SDK feedback alias

Whenever any error occurs, there is an option to email the log file to Microsoft for analysis.

Click Email error log file to open your email client and create an email with the log file attached to send to the AD RMS SDK feedback alias to analyze in order to help improve future versions of the product.
