SharePoint supports intranet, extranet and Internet applications from a single, integrated platform. Specific licenses you need depend on three factors: what capabilities are used, how it is implemented SharePoint and where the system is hosted. The terms and conditions for how you can use the software are defined in the document  Product Use Rights (PUR)  document and the product list.

SharePoint Online is licensed per user. SharePoint Online can be purchased as stand-alone plan or include it as part of Office 365 plans. Data from SharePoint Online licenses are available here .

For local Intranet sites are licensed using a server model / CAL (Client Access License). SharePoint Server 2013 is required for each running instance of the software, and CALs are required for each person or device accessing a SharePoint Server.

SharePoint Standard CAL. standard CAL provides the core capabilities of SharePoint

  • Sites: single infrastructure for all your business websites
  • Communities: integrated collaboration platform
  • Content: ECM for the masses
  • Search: relevance, refinement and people; includes FAST Enterprise Search

SharePoint Enterprise CAL. CALs company offers the full capabilities of SharePoint

  • Sites: single infrastructure for all your business websites
  • Communities: integrated collaboration platform
  • Content: ECM for the masses
  • Search: relevance, refinement and people; includes FAST Enterprise Search
  • Business Solutions (includes Access Services and InfoPath Services)
    Business Intelligence for everyone (including Power View, PerformancePoint Services, Excel Services and Visio Services)

Note

  • SharePoint Enterprise CAL is additive: To access the Enterprise Edition Feature SharePoint, a person or device must have SharePoint Standard CAL and SharePoint Enterprise CAL.
  • In SharePoint 2013, for scenarios extranet and Internet sites, CAL is not required for external users.
    • External users means users that are not you or the employees of its affiliates, or onsite contractors or agents in situ its affiliates.
    • SharePoint 2010 customers with Software Assurance (SA) benefit from exchange rights to a previous version of the Volume Licensing program to run parts of SharePoint 2010 with rights to use SharePoint 2013.
