SharePoint 2010: SSRS Troubleshooting - You See an Error Message Regarding ContainerTypeNotSupported When You View a Report from a SharePoint Document Library

Background

When you attempt to view a Reporting Services report in a SharePoint document library you see an error message that resembles the following:

System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: The target location you specified is not supported by the report server. A report definition (.rdl), report model (.smdl), resource, or shared data source (.rds) file must be located in the library or a folder within it. Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ContainerTypeNotSupported

This behavior will occur when a SharePoint site is configured to use Alternate Access Mappings (AAM) but the mappings do not include the host name "localhost" in any of the security zones.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:

  • Use SharePoint Central Administration to add an Alternate Access Mapping entry for http://localhost
  • Use the full computer name in the URL when you want to access the report.

Applies to

  • Reporting Services Add-in for Microsoft SharePoint 2010
