Wiki: Feature Requests

Wiki: Feature Requests

The current plan (as of June 14, 2013) is to eventually retire this Wiki, after we have included all of the suggestions here into the Wiki section of Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools. Already there is some duplication. As the features on this page are migrated to the other Wiki, they will be moved to the "Completed/Closed Requests" section of this Wiki. Then finally, this Wiki will be retired.

For any new TechNet Wiki feature requests, add them to the Wiki section of Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools.

If your idea is really a bug fix, then add it to the list of TechNet Wiki Known Issues.

The features below are divided by category and listed in order they are written (not in order of priority). (The goal isn't to prioritize features here; it's only to capture the ideas.) The sections are listed in alphabetical order.

Completed/Closed Requests

Design

1. New TechNet Wiki Logo

Submitted by George Doubinski here (forum link).
Moved to "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

2. A Visual Alternative to the Content Portal Section

Submitted by George Doubinski here (forum link). George says, "IMHO, would be better off with a tidy list with icons."
Moved to "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

3. Make Wiki use the full page width

Submitted by Peter Geelen, here (forum link). Duplicated in "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

4. Add UnDo Button in Wiki Editor

Many Wiki Editor Issues cannot be easily fixed because we do not have an UnDo button. For example, indenting and adding bullet items can result in undesired behavior, but the only solution might be to cancel and start over. Submitted by Richard Mueller. Moved to "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

Links

1. Flag External Links

Automatically put a visual flag on external links so that we know when we're leaving the Wiki.

NOTE: This feature does not flag TechNet forum links, but it does flag any other TechNet links (such as Library links) and it flags any other forum links (such as Microsoft Answers or MSDN).

2. Target New Windows for External Links

Make the default behavior target a new window for an external link. "External" is defined by any site that is not TechNet Wiki. By that definition, "external" includes other TechNet and Microsoft pages.

3. External Links Icon Tooltip

Because the External Links icon isn't super clear (that your link is external and thus will open up in a new window), we would add the tooltip to the icon that says something like, "This link is external to TechNet Wiki. It will open in a new window."

Lists

1. Top Authors this Month

The top 10 people who created the most articles each month. Cycle it out each day like we do with the weekly list of editors/contributors. (So it's a list of authors in the last month from the current day.) Submitted by Ed Price.

NOTE: The list is of the Top 5 New Articles Created of the month. Find that in the Wiki Leaderboards on the right side of this page:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/default.aspx

1. Most Popular Articles (by views)

Submitted by George Doubinski here (forum link).
Moved to "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

2. Most Active Articles (by number of changes or unique contributors)

Submitted by George Doubinski here (forum link).
Moved to "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

3. My Most Recently Viewed Articles

Submitted by George Doubinski here (forum link).
Moved to "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

4. My Created Articles

This list will appear on a Home page tab (at the bottom), on your profile, or on a separate page for links like this (similar to how on the Forums page, there is a persistent link on the right called "My threads" that takes you to a page that lists every thread you've posted in). I recommend the last option (a separate page) because it would work similar to the Forums page that already exists. The My created articles link would live on the right side of every Wiki page, under the Options section. Submitted by Ed Price. Moved to "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

5. My Favorite Articles

We used to have this feature on the old profile, where you can pick what articles you want to have displayed in a list. This makes the most sense in a profile (to show off your favorite articles to others). Moved to "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

6. Page Views

Include the number of page views on each Wiki page. Duplicated in "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

Inserted Objects and Media

1. Lightbox Feature to Allow Viewing Larger Images

Considering modern screen sizes, image size restriction of 600px seems to be quite low, especially for the larger screenshots. It makes sense that the image size is all that can fit on the screen. However, to utilize larger images, we would need a lightbox feature so that readers can zoom in on the required image (or even part of it!). Live Writer has been doing that (subject to support from a blogging engine). Here are examples of lightbox plugins: http://blog.insicdesigns.com/2009/01/10-promising-jquery-lighbox-plugin/.  Submitted by George Doubinski here (forum link).

Moved to "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

2. Ability to Embed Any Video

Currently TechNet Wiki is limited to embedding YouTube videos. If we could embed any videos, then we could embed videos that currently live in the TechNet Library video system. Submitted by Ed Price.
Duplicated in "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

Page Navigation

1. Table of Contents

Feature to automatically display the Table of Contents.

1. Expand / Collapse a Section

Similar to TechNet Library topics, the sections would have + and - buttons on the right side that enable you to expand or collaps the sections. This allows you to minimize the sections you don't want to read so that you can focus on the sections of the page that you do want to read. Another possible implementation is to have an arrow immediately to the left of the topic that you can use to collapse or exand a section, such as on this TechNet Library page: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124558(v=EXCHG.80).aspx.
Duplicated in "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

2. Section Template for Navigation Usability

Similar to Wikipedia, rather than entering all your text into one Design text box, you enter information into separate boxes for separate sections of the page. This can then automatically create the TOC, it can automatically add a "Back to top" section at the bottom of each H1 section, and it can automatically add a horizontal line rule to divide each H1 section. It would also make it simpler to add the expand and collapse feature (item #1 above). In this Library example from above (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124558(v=EXCHG.80).aspx), it includes a horizontal line rule with the H1 sections. Submitted by Ed Price.
Moved to "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

Tags

1. RSS Feed for Tags

In addition to the browser's RSS feed capability, we should add an RSS feature to tags. Submitted by George Doubinski.
Moved to "Feature Requests for TechNet and MSDN Profiles and Social Platform Tools".

2. Tags Editor Tool

A tool that would enable you to edit the capilization of tags. This would allow us to make tags look consistent. Another solution would be simply to force all tags to be all lower case. Currently the first person who enters the tag controls the case of the tag. Here is an example of tags that are inconsistent:
