In the first version of Windows Rights Management Services, you could ensure that clients used a minimum version of the RMS client software. You did this by using the lockbox version that was associated with the client to exclude the previous versions of the RMS client software. When you enabled this feature, you specified the latest minimum lockbox version that was signed by the Microsoft Activation Service. You then enabled lockbox exclusion on the administration Web site of each cluster on which you wanted it to take effect.
The RMS client is now an integral part of Microsoft Windows, and has been since Windows Vista. In the case of earlier versions of Windows, only the RMS client for Service Pack 2 (SP2) is supported. There's no longer any benefit to excluding specific lockbox versions.
