Analytics for Twitter is being refreshed for Office 2013.  For updates & status please visit the Analytics for Twitter 2013 wiki.

Exception while Searching - Twitter API Updated

ISSUE:
During a search query an exception message box appears and states:

“An exception occurred while searching: @Windows8

Please verify your search query (see Instructions worksheet) and try again.”

CAUSE:

Twitter has updated their API and appears to be rate limiting on the legacy API.

SOLUTION:
Try to perform your search during off peak hours (evening, night, etc).   We are working on a new version that utilizes the new Twitter API.  New versions will be made available here.

"400 Bad Request: The request was invalid." message box

ISSUE:
During a search query an exception message box appears and states: “400 Bad Request: The request was invalid.”

CAUSE:

The search query specified is not supported.

SOLUTION:
Update your search query to conform to one of the supported formats detailed in the “Instructions” worksheet.

"420 Enhance Your Calm ..." message box

ISSUE:
During a search query an exception message box appears and states: “420 Enhance Your Calm: Returned by the Twitter Search API when you are being rate limited.”

CAUSE:

Twitter is temporarily limiting traffic from your machine and/or domain.

SOLUTION:
Wait a few minutes and try again. If the problem persists, try your query on an alternative network.

"PowerPivot for Excel. Unable to Update. The following tables could not be updated: tblTweets" message box

ISSUE:
After clicking the "Update All" function in the PowerPivot ribbon bar, a PowerPivot for Excel message box pops up and states: “Unable to Update. The following tables could not be updated: tblTweets. Linked tables might not bet updated because of conflicting data types or duplicate values in a column. Ensure that the data type of the selected content matches ...”

CAUSE:

PowerPivot does not support importing date columns that are formatted in several international formats (i.e. German, en-NZ, etc).

SOLUTION:
Close Excel, change your PC's date and time format to English/US, reopen the document, and then try again.

Supported Windows Operating Systems

ISSUE:
Why are the only supported operating system versions: Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows 7 Professional?

CAUSE:

Windows 7 Enterprise and Professional were the only operating system versions tested prior to release.

SOLUTION:
Try "Analytics for Twitter" on your Windows OS version and post back and let us know if it worked for you.

Compatibility Issues with PowerPivot CTP3

ISSUE:
A "PowerPivot for Excel" error message specifying "Unable to Update" is presented during a PowerPivot table refresh while using the CTP3 (Beta) version of PowerPivot.

CAUSE:

The CTP3 version of PowerPivot has added rules that invalidate certain relationships defined in the "Analytics for Twitter" solution.

SOLUTION:
Stick with the Released version of PowerPivot (i.e. version 1). It is possible that Microsoft might release an update when the CTP3 PowerPivot version is formally released to the public.

  • John Broomfield edited Revision 22. Comment: I am playing with the 2010 version. Can you just change the search URL used in your code from this - "search.twitter.com/search.atom " to this - "twitter.com/search to comply with the new API?

  • Same thing as Campbell83 - the search does not work and gives a message: "An Exeption occured while searching:.."

  • For those who are having trouble downloading Twitter data -- please try some different queries (i.e. Microsoft or #sql).  Feel free to post the queries that are causing you trouble.

  • I receive the "an exception occurred" error for any query I try

  • Getting the following error trying to run the twitter analytics (uses the default search options)

    Search Query = @Office

ERROR = "An exception occured while searching: @Office"

What am i doing wrong? does this thing work with the default setup?

  • Hi Guys! Have been trying this great tool on my laptop and after changing the date format everything works like a charm!

However I wanted to go one step further and deploy this file on a SharePoint where I enabled PowerPivot. I was able to upload the doc but when I connect to it from a client it tells me that some features are not supported and it seems like I can't use the search field and it does not allow external connections. Is there something I can do about it (maybe some SharePoint settings?) or is this the way how PowerPivot for SharePoint works at the moment?

Cheers and  keep up the good work!

    Michael

  • I'm having the same problem as many others with An Exception occured while searching ... I have tried many different kind of search string including the default ones but always the same results. I have used this at another computer while with another company and it worked well there. Would love to have it working

  • Hi, having trouble with this tool. I downloaded it, and ran it the first time, no problems, returned the results expected. however now every time I run it, it's stuck on the same date range, and I can't change the dates? there's no instruction on how to change the date range, and every time I run it, it's simply pulling the same old data.

  • Fernando Lugão Veltem edited Revision 17. Comment: added tags

  • This is really brilliant, but I agree that adding the possibility to retrieve number of twitter followers would be a very useful addiction!

  • What proxy settings should be allowd. I have tried this from home, working find. From the office it doesn't work, what do I need to tell my datacom department?

  • Can anyone tell me how the GETPIVOTDATA("[Measures].[Maximum of Date 1]",Topics_Pivot!$B$58), "mm/dd/yyyy") works? I just can't figure-out what the "Date 1" element is.

  • It seems that Twitter is getting serious with its announced API changes as this tool is no longer able to grab any Tweets (It still worked three days ago...).

    Can anybody confirm this?

  • Richard Mueller edited Revision 18. Comment: Fixed duplicate <a name> tags in HTML so TOC works
