In Windows Embedded Compact 7, one new Platform Builder OS design template was added and four existing design templates were updated to provide support for Microsoft RemoteFX. In addition, a new RemoteFX catalog item and SYSGEN variable were added. You use these design templates, catalog item, and SYSGEN variable to add RemoteFX functionality to an OS design.
A design template is a starting point you can use to create an OS design; it contains catalog items for the functionality that you want your OS to support. In Platform Builder, you can begin creating an OS design by choosing a design template, or by individually selecting catalog items, depending on the requirements of your device. The Remote Experience Thin Client design template is new in Compact 7. You can use this design template as a starting point for creating “Remote-only” lightweight thin client devices with minimal local footprint; it does not include a browser or Windows Media Player.

Four existing OS design templates were updated in Compact 7 to provide RemoteFX support. These design templates are:

To add RemoteFX support to an OS design by using one of these four design templates, in the Networking and Communications window, select the RemoteFX check box. The following screen shot shows the RemoteFX option in the Networking and Communications window.
A new RemoteFX catalog item and SYSGEN variable, SYSGEN_RDP_REMOTEFX, were also added in Compact 7. The catalog item and SYSGEN variable provide base RemoteFX functionality, including RemoteFX software and hardware-assisted decoding, for connecting to Remote Desktop Virtualization Host and Remote Desktop Session Host.
