Wiki: The Community Council and the Advisory Board

This article is a meta-article - an article about the TechNet Wiki itself.

There are two governing bodies for the TechNet Wiki:
  1. The TechNet Wiki Community Council
  2. The TechNet Wiki Advisory Board

This article sets out to explain the differences between the two bodies. Clairity in roles helps to provide confidence in actions.

As defined in the TechNet Wiki Community Council article, the Community Council is a group of members from both Microsoft and the Community. The Community Council takes responsibility for the following goals and tasks:

  • Represents the Wiki community members to the community as a whole and to Microsoft.
  • Arbitrates disagreements between Wiki members over edits and/or policy change/feature change requests.
  • Recommends policy changes.
  • Maintains and enforces the Code of Conduct.
  • Fosters, incubates, and curates community.
  • Seeks to progress the Wiki in many ways, by driving various improvements, as defined in the TechNet Wiki Community Council: Areas of Focus.

As defined in the TechNet Wiki Advisory Board article, the charter for the Advisory Board focuses on moderating technology areas across TechNet Wiki by sustaining great community and great content:

  • Build participation and mindshare for the TechNet Wiki.
  • Shepherd content through active review, moderation and contribution.
  • Advise Microsoft technical writers, new Microsoft contributors, and community members on best practices, tips, and guidelines.
  • Review content from Microsoft technical writers, new Microsoft contributors, and key community contributors.

Because some of the goals of the two bodies may be overlapping, it was proposed and decided that the Council would take a more 'arbitrative' role.

The differences are:

  • The Advisory Board will drive moderation and adoption around individual technologies.
  • The Community Council is a taskforce for expanding the impact growth of the Wiki in various areas. One of those includes Governing Guidelines. See the TechNet Wiki Community Council: Areas of Focus.
