How to Ban or Report a TechNet or MSDN User Account

How to Ban or Report a TechNet or MSDN User Account

This article is part of the Wiki series: MSDN/TechNet Forums.

This article explains how to flag or report a user account that you see in any TechNet or MSDN tool, including:

  • TechNet Wiki
  • Forums
  • Blogs
  • Gallery/Samples
  • Library Annotations

You might want to flag an account that is abusing the system in the following ways:

  • Inappropriate name, rude, or are using crude words
  • Spam account (the account's only purpose is to advertise)
    • NOTE: Do not confuse this with users who link to their sites or blogs. This is when a post is clearly off topic and clearly only exists to advertise an unrelated Web site.

To Report a TechNet Wiki Account

Click here: https://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/mailform/contactus.aspx?refurl=http://technet.microsoft.com/wiki/

Enter the following information in the form:

  1. Name of the alias/account
  2. Link to the account's Profile page
  3. Link to any spam pages (such as Wiki spam changes)

  1. Link to the account's Profile page.
  2. Link to any spam pages (such as Forum spam posts)

Report abusive content

To Flag a Forum Post as Abusive

You might need to flag a specific post as inappropriate (rude, button pushing, etc.) or as spam. But it isn't clear that the account should be banned (this is most cases).

  1. In the bottom-right corner of any forum post (including the original post for the thread), click Report As Abuse. This opens a drop-down menu.
  2. Click one of the options. If you're unsure, it doesn't matter too much which one you pick.
  3. Make sure you clearly explain the reason for reporting the post.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Only report other people's posts when they are explicitly violating the terms of use.
Disagreement with technical content, or dislike of a person is no reason for reporting content or persons.

  • Mary, instead we'll link to the appropriate article. Thanks!

  • Mary, I added this article that's directly about Wiki pages: social.technet.microsoft.com/.../13529.how-to-report-a-technet-wiki-page.aspx

  • SQL Server Dude, can you open a thread in the Forum Issues forum with a link to your account that got banned and to any recent thread URLs. Here's the forum: social.technet.microsoft.com/.../threads

  • SQL Server Dude, here's an example of someone who was recently banned and shouldn't have been (they were mistaken as the spammer): social.technet.microsoft.com/.../5002e885-31ba-49be-8a16-461e5f432500

  • I can find several posts where it just says "spam..." and some numbers. So I think that post had been reported. But couldn't there be some information of what it was about?

  • thanks Sir.

  • Hi Ed !

I have put updated link for Report Forum Spammers as Report Spam 7 is locked now. Okay i am Editing this with new link. Also adding a NOTE in this wiki so whenever Report Spam is changed we can update it.

    Thanks, Hasham Niaz

  • Hasham Niaz edited Revision 24. Comment: Adding NOTE , updating Report Forum Spammers Link

  • Livio: you can follow the history of every page on the History tab.

The numbers are basically the date when the article was reported as spam. I put the original ID of the article (for example, this article has an ID of 5041) after the date and a dash, to avoid duplicate names.

    Check social.technet.microsoft.com/.../13529.how-to-report-a-technet-wiki-page.aspx as well.

  • Thanks Hasham!

  • Richard Mueller edited Revision 25. Comment: Added tags, added horizontal rules

  • Toni Petrina edited Revision 26. Comment: Replaced link for reporting forum spammers.
