SQL Back End for Lync

SQL Back end is a requirement for deployment of Lync Server 2010 Enterprise Edition. Supported SQL Server versions are,
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard/Enterprise (64-bit edition)
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard/Enterprise (64-bit edition) with Service Pack 1 (SP1) (required) or latest service pack (recommended) 
  •  Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard/Enterprise (64-bit edition) with Service Pack 3 (SP3) (required) or latest service pack (recommended)

*Lync Server 2010 does not support SQL Native DB Mirroring

Every Lync Server 2010 Front End server will have it's own SQL 2008 Express edition as a local data store. This local data store replicates with the SQL back end it replicates with all the Lync Server 2010 Front end data stores, Survivable Branch Servers (SBS) and Survivable Branch Appliences (SBA) as well.

Lync Server 2010 Archiving and Monitoring databases also can be deployed on the same SQL Back end. Both of Archiving and Monitoring Server Roles will need a separate SQl Instances for the deployment. The Monitoring role will need to have SQL Reporting services to be installed in the SQL Instance.

*Deploying Archiving and Monitoring Server Roles in the same SQL Back End Server is not recommended.
