Windows Server include sicurezza, gestione e funzionalità amministrative, ad esempio uno stack di rete (IPv6 nativo, Wireless nativo, velocità e sicurezza); installazione basata su immagine, distribuzione e recupero; diagnostica, monitoraggio, registrazione degli eventi e tools di reportistica; funzioni di sicurezza quali BitLocker e ASLR; Windows Firewall con configurazione predefinita sicura; tecnologia .NET Framework 3.0, in particolare Windows Communication Foundation, Microsoft Message Queuing e Windows Workflow Foundation; il kernel, la memoria ed il file system. Processori e dispositivi di memoria sono gestiti come dispositivi Plug and Play, per consentire l'hot-plugging. In questo modo le risorse di sistema possono essere partizionate in modo dinamico. Ogni partizione ha la propria memoria, processore e dispositivi di I/O bridge indipendenti dalle altre partizioni.

Strumenti di virtualizzazione Hyper-V con Live Migration e Dynamic Memory, Remote Fx in Remote Desktop Services, power management e le funzionalità di integrazione con Windows 7 come BranchCache e Direct Access. Con Windows Server, i clienti hanno maggiore controllo e la capacità di reagire alle esigenze aziendali più velocemente con strumenti potenti, come ad esempio Internet Information Services (IIS), update Server Manager, piattaforme Hyper-V e Windows PowerShell.
