Free Anti-virus and Anti-Phishing programs - typically, you want to pick only one of these programs to run on any specific computer, since they often conflict when run together:

Check out all the junk that is running on your computer - this is real work and not for the really novice user. Still, it has the potential of really increasing performance by allowing you to remove or disable junk programs.
Performance and security tip: uninstall any programs that you are not using. There is not point in having programs running on your system that you do not need or use.

Do not believe anything that claims to speed up your computer with a registry cleaner advertisement - unless you actually know and trust the vendor. There are a lot of  malicious programs that are distributed by claiming that they will fix your registry problems or enhance your computer performance.
